3 Key Ingredients of a Coaching Conversation

Allowing our graduates to walk out their freedom in Christ while at Teen Challenge is necessary to prepare them to live successful Christian lives after TC. When a student first enters the program we tell them what to do because they are a new babe in Christ. As they become spiritually mature, we give them more responsibility to make decisions with the help of the Holy Spirit. This is key to helping our graduates transition back to society as productive citizens and where coaching is especially helpful in the discipleship process.

Being led by the Holy Spirit to ask the right questions at the right time of the right person

Two people having a conversation

Two people having a conversation

will help them develop the critical thinking skills necessary to adjust to life after TC. This will require several coaching conversations. A coaching conversation has three key ingredients which will move the person forward:

  1. Explores – connect with the students where they are at. Talk about the things they want to talk about. This is the student’s time to explore what’s inside of them and to have a simple conversation that will help them dream about the possibilities for their future.
  2. Excites – Get excited about  the things they are excited about. Excitement or joy is contagious and fires up the brain to create. If you are excited about their future, they are excited too and they will believe it’s possible to create. A joyful heart is good medicine.
  3. Exhorts – Be an Encourager – a Barnabas. Along the way, the student will meet upon obstacles which may prevent them from becoming who God created them to be. Your role is to encourage them to live from a stance of victory and not defeat. Encourage them to turn the trials into opportunities.

I have found that the best coaching conversations are in the moment – as you go about daily life on campus. You can draw out so much more when you are in a relaxed environment. Listen and watch for the moment to coach and ask these powerful questions:

What is here that you want to explore?
How does this fit with your plans and values?
What are you willing to do to accomplish this?
What support will you need along the way?
What is your desired outcome?

Rep’s Link – Dec 2015

Welcome

This month we have three Teen Challenges implement the ELP on their campuses – Primrose Hill – MO, Delmarva – DE and a re-start at North Carolina Boy’s Academy. We welcome Susie Baier, Saint Clair Sterling and Bush Coleman as ELP Representatives respectively. Thank you for answering the call to raise up the next generation of leaders in Teen Challenge!

Level I Adult

Our new course is Core Values and our text: Our Core Values by Dr. Jerry Nance. The core values of an organization define the essence of the organization; they are a very small set of guiding principles that have a profound impact on how everyone in the organization thinks and behaves. In this course, the emerging leaders will learn our values of integrity, compassion, community, vision, stewardship, faith and servanthood.

Level I Adolescent

Our course for the Adolescent track is Leading Others and our text: Habitudes III – the Art of Leading Others by Dr. Tim Elmore. Your emerging student leaders will learn how to lead those in their care. Habitudes furnishes images that teach them leadership truths which will enable them to wisely influence their world.

Monthly Book Orders and Grades

Southeast region Rep’s can go to Google Drive and search for ELP Monthly Order Form and Grade Sheet Edited. Look for your center’s name in the tabs at the bottom and fill in your information. No need to save or email the spreadsheet (Google Drive saves it and we can access the info from my Drive). If you place an initial order on the form and update the order later (i.e. add 2 more books) after we have ordered your books, please send to me at andree.aiken@teenchallenge.cc. All new applications must be in by the 10th of the month for students starting the 15th.

ELP Highlights – Dec 2015

Name: Michelle SheppardMichelle Shepphard

Age: 32
Hometown: Peoria, Arizona
Teen Challenge Center: Home of Hope, Casa Grande, AZ  Graduated : May 2013
My Testimony in Brief:
I grew up with a christian background, but never personally knew the Lord. When I reached my 20s- I made bad decisions and fell into alcohol addiction. At 29 years old- I finally found myself at rock bottom where I desperately wanted to change my life. I cried out to the Lord and he helped me! I was told about Teen Challenge and knew that was God’s will for me. I entered the program with restored hope and a new relationship with the Lord Jesus Christ!
The Purpose and Calling God Has Given Me:
I am now Education Coordinator of the Pensacola Teen Challenge Women’s Center! God has given me his blessing to lead these women to an understanding of His Word that will ultimately set the foundation for their recovery!
The ELP’s Impact on My Leadership:
ELP has impacted me tremendously. Each one of the 8 books has helped shape my character into that of Christ. In particular- Servant Leadership and Armor Bearer. This curriculum continues to help grow, challenge and confirm the calling that the Lord has on my life!

Great Leaders Evaluate How they Spend Their Time

What is the Quality of your Life?

One of the most important things you can do is to sit down and think deeply about how you spend your time, where you don’t spend your time and where you should be spending your time- not just at work, but also in every part of your life. The quality of your life is directly affected by how and where you spend your time.

      –Lee Cockerell

I don’t know about you but when I read this quote, conviction came over me like a flood.  I was stunned to think about the wasted moments in my life…sleeping that extra hour instead of praying, turning on the TV before bed instead of talking to a loved one, reading How-we-spend-our-daysan inspiring book or jotting a note to someone who needs encouragement.

Pause and think with me about the moments in your days that need a “makeover.”  Think about the blocks of time, which we are the authors of; times that could make a difference in eternity- meditating on a Scripture in an area where you are struggling instead of spending time giving into the struggle, journaling your thoughts, ideas and dreams instead of telling yourself they can’t or won’t happen, contacting someone that you should’ve contacted a long time ago to make amends.

I want to challenge you to seize every moment- be a good steward of all that God has given you, use your gifts for others and be consistent in all of these things. God will bless you and your family. Your family and others will be challenged by your example and emulate it.

Seize the moment ideas:

  1. Keep a devotion book in the bathroom
  2. Keep audios in your car about finances, marriage, parenting, etc.
  3. Always have a notebook- many people use their phones or other devices to record thoughts, ideas & lists but you can easily become distracted doing this. There is nothing like a good pen and a blank page.
  4. Keep your sword near. It will ensure your perspective is on point.
  5. Keep blank cards handy to jot notes to those God puts on your heart.
  6. When someone asks you to pray, do it right then. Don’t wait.
  7. Always have a good book at your bedside- something that you can’t wait to read.
  8. Speak life and encouragement to those around you, especially your family- if you are thinking something positive, say it right then.

Let’s take occasion to look at how we are spending (and not spending) our time and ask God to show us the changes we can make, for His glory.  Let’s seize the moment together, friends, and see how God can “makeover” those wasted spells.  Remember, anything we do for Him will be multiplied back to us.  Let us take Him at His Word, together, and see what comes of it!
