Welcome

This month we welcome Lauren Schiller as the new Rep for Pensacola Women’s Home and Holly Williams as the Rep for the Emerging Leaders College. Lauren and Holly, thank you for answering the call to raise up Gen-next!

Level I Adult

Our upcoming course is Boundaries and our text: Boundaries by Dr. Henry Cloud and Dr. John Townsend. This course is designed to help our emerging student leaders learn how to have proper boundaries in their lives.  Having clear boundaries is essential to a healthy, balanced lifestyle. A boundary is a personal property line that marks those things for which we are responsible. Emerging leaders will discover firsthand how sound boundaries give them freedom to walk as the loving, giving, fulfilled individual God created them to be.

Level I Adolescent

Our course for the Adolescent track is Self Leadership and our text: Habitudes #1 “The Art of Self-Leadership” by Dr. Tim Elmore. Habitudes are images that form leadership habits and attitudes. This book is part of a series of three. We believe leadership is a 360-degree proposition. The leadership journey begins with self-leadership – learning to lead ourselves well!

ELP Summit_Staff Day

We are exactly one month out from our ELP Summit_Staff Day scheduled for August 15-18 at Lakeside Retreat and Event Center. If you have not already registered yourself and your emerging leaders for this event, registration will close on July 15th, so go ahead and register here.  Look out for our final e-memo in a few weeks which will give you final details on what to bring.

Leaders develop leaders

It takes a leader to develop a leader – leaders learn best from other leaders. Emerging leaders want to be around leaders who have battle scars; who have actually been in the game and have a few blood stains on their uniforms. For emerging leaders to be seasoned, wise, and effective leaders, they need proximity to, and interaction with veteran leaders.

How do we do this?

  1. In Jesus’ day, it was common for leaders-in-training to simply follow the veteran leader around. They would walk together, talk together, eat their meals together, sleep in neighboring tents – they spent months and years living life with Jesus. The Scene_from_passion_of_the_christdisciples internalize the vision and values of the veteran leader in ways that served them the rest of their lives.  Although this sounds simple and time-sensitive, it was effective then, and can be effective now – there is no substitute for personal investment. Those of us who are more seasoned in leadership should order our lives in such a way that we can carve out time to invest in Gen-next.
  2. Mentor and coach small groups of young leaders. Mentoring and coaching curriculum like Start Right Mentoring are available to help in any situation. It is the responsibility of veterans to provide the necessary opportunities so the next generation of leaders will be trained and ready to meet the challenges of the future.

What is the best catalyst for a leader’s growth?

Make him or her lead something. After Jesus identified and invested in his disciples, the moment came when He said “Pack your bags, it’s show time!” It’s make-it or break-it time! It’s swim or sink time. He didn’t minimize the challenge; He sent them out like sheep among wolves. This is the real deal. The stakes are high, the possibility of failure is real and I’m not going to protect you from all risks. You’ve got to step out and go lead! We must hand emerging leaders an important kingdom baton, not a little make-believe job or a low-stakes challenge. Something that will make them feel believed in, valued, and held in high esteem. Something that will make them fall on their knees and cry out for God’s help; something that will demand the best they have to offer. Leaders live for high-stakes challenges; kingdom goals that make them gasp and gulp.

What am I advocating for?

High stakes leadership and Kingdom challenges. Provide opportunities, stand by our emerging leaders, cheer them on, help them solve problems, pray for them and coach them to higher effectiveness. Help them find their niche and reach their full potential. Whatever challenges Teen Challenge face in the years ahead, I hope we can face them with confidence knowing that we were wise enough to invest in Gen-next.

Welcome

Over the last few months we’ve had a few changes in Rep’s within our region; we want to welcome new Rep’s  Danielle McKinney (Pen W), Todd Adams (Pen M), Frank Carbonell (Tallahassee), Sandra Marotta (Southwest FL W) and Rachel Olmeda (Lakeland). Welcome leaders! Thank you for answering the call to raise up sons and daughters on your campuses who know their identity in Christ, their purpose in life and are ready to serve the ministry and the Kingdom of God. Huge responsibility, but with the Holy Spirit’s guidance we can do it!

Level I Adult

This month is the beginning of  the core course cycle with Knowing and Understanding ExperiencingGodGod’s Will and our text: Experiencing God by Henry and Richard Blackaby and Claude King (ISBN # 978-1415858387). God is inviting us to experience Him in an intimate love relationship through which He reveals to us His will, His ways and His work. When you realize where God is working, you can join Him in what He is doing. You will have great discussions in your weekly ELP meetings in this 2-month course!

Level I Adolescent

Our course for the Adolescent track is Leading Others and our text: Habitudes #3 – TheHabitudes 3-FB  Art of Leading Others by Dr. Tim Elmore. The images Dr. Elmore provides are memorable and powerful in conveying key leadership principles. We want to communicate to our students that in the ELP leadership starts first with leading yourself well – then with connecting with others – and finally, we lead those in our care.

We welcome Tiffany Benninger from Hosanna House as the ELP Adolescent Representative! Tiffany has a heart to raise up daughters and has already been coaching and mentoring the girls at Hosanna House using some of the ELP Level I Adult books and her experience as a mentor.

This month our core course is Discover Your Gifts and our text is Discover Your God- Discover Your Gifts New editiongiven Gifts by Don & Katie Fortune. Knowing the motivational gifts (Romans 12:6-8) the Lord has given to the emerging leaders will help you to serve them better and not put them in boxes or do things the way we do.

It will enable you to leverage personal power instead of mere positional power. The leadership journey begins with self-leadership – we must lead ourselves before we lead anyone else and then we learn to lead and influence those around us.

Which Center/What Year did you Graduate: Southwest Florida, 2013

My Testimony in Brief:

I originally graduated Teen Challenge in 2009. During my internship I met a man and we left prematurely to be together. We got married and fell back into a destructive lifestyle. After 3 years I came back to Teen Challenge and in that time my husband filed for divorce. I was crushed but learned to lean on Jesus. He mended my broken hearts and showed me who Baylee was in Christ. I am currently in an internship & my husband is back in Teen Challenge as well. God has completely restored our marriage and placed a calling on our lives to work in this ministry together. We are both enrolled in the ELP program and plan on continuing in the call he placed on our lives 5 years ago. I now walk everyday in His light and the promises he has for our lives!

The purpose and calling God has given me: To work in Teen Challenge, walking alongside broken individuals just like me & to be a Godly wife!

The ELP’s impact on my leadership: Wow! Since being in ELP this time around my whole perspective on leading has changed. God has birthed a burden in me to Shepherd women just as my leaders have done me. I have learned who I am in Christ and the authority and compassion I carry to build ladies up while allowing God to continuously grow me!

Our course for the Adolescent track is Servant Leadership and our text: Help, I’m a Student Leader by Doug Fields. Although this book is set in the context of a church youth group, the leadership principles can be applied anywhere. In this book your emerging leaders will learn:

  1. How Jesus led others
  2. Figure out how to be more helpful to others
  3. Discover the secrets of getting others involved
  4. How to listen better
  5. And, Deepen their faith by helping others

Yoked up with Jesus

While doing my devotions this morning the Lord reminded me of this well known scripture in John 15:4-5 “Abide in Me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit of itself unless it abides in the vine, so neither can you unless you abide in Me. I am the vine, you are the branches; he who abides in Me and I in him, he bears much fruit, for apart from Me you can do nothing.” (NASB). Another version says “I am the Vine, you are the branches. When you’re joined with me and I with you, the relation intimate and organic, the harvest is sure to be abundant. Separated, you can’t produce a thing.” (TM). Years ago I read a little book by Bruce Wilkinson Secrets of the Vine. The entire book speaks to what happens when we remain connected and yoked-up with Christ.

Abiding goes deeper than a superficial “hi” or “hello, nice to see you” relationship. It speaks to remaining, dwelling – to continue in lasting relationship with someone. When we are joined in intimate, organic relationship with Christ we grow and bear much, more fruit. Practicing God’s presence (consistently connecting with Him in the holy place) is essential for us as spiritual coaches. When we are joined with Christ, He gives us spiritual intelligence and insights to care for the students and emerging leaders as He would. Apart from this, we will not produce sons and daughters who remain.

Our desire is to raise up the next generation of leaders who are yoked up with Christ and are responsible to the call on their lives. In closing I want us to reflect on 3 questions:

  1. How can I improve the quality of my relationship with the Lord?
  2. What situation(s) am I facing that requires spiritual intelligence that only God can help with?
  3. How can I model being yoked-up with Christ to my ESL’s?
