Rep’s Link

Welcome

This month we welcome Jason Peltier as the ELP Rep for Pensacola Men’s Home. Jason is a graduate of Teen Challenge San Diego, Riverside and Orange County. He is a TCIMI graduate and was recently employed at Pensacola where he and his wife serve the ministry.

Level I Adult

This month we start a new course Servant Leadership and our text: Lead Like Jesus by Ken Blanchard and Phil Hodges. Blanchard and Hodges focus on four key areas and how they can direct you toward becoming the incredible leader you aim to be. The four areas are:

  • Heart – What is your motivation as a leader, whether as head of a family, church or large corporation?
  • Head – What are your beliefs and viewpoints about leadership?
  • Hands – Do you set clear goals and measure performance, consistently following up with those you lead?
  • Habits – How do you refresh and renew yourself as a leader?

The students will learn how to align their leadership motivation, viewpoint, behaviors and habits with those of Jesus to effectively lead others. Rep’s, please reference the Weekly Meeting Template and use it for your weekly meetings.

Level I Adolescent

Our course for the Adolescent track is Discover your God-given Purpose and our text: Chazown by Craig Groeschel. Pronounced khaw-ZONE from the Hebrew, meaning a dream, revelation, or vision. You were born with your own Chazown. Do you know what it is?

Pursue your Chazown and simultaneously improve five critical aspects of your life – your relationship with God, your relationships with people, your finances, your health and fitness, and your vocational life. Craig asks the question: are you living someone else’s dream for your life or even no dream at all? If so, he invites you on a most unusual odyssey – to find, name, and live out your Chazown!

Head Scratching Picks

A couple of days ago, Media Analyst, Daniel Jeremiah wrote an article called, 2016 NFL Draft: Five Head-Scratching Picks. In the article, Jeremiah describes five NFL “picks” that literally left him scratching his head.  They were players that he felt should have been “passed over” for other, more talented or qualified players.

Rewind with me, three thousand years ago to another head-scratching moment that changed the course of history.  You know the story well but humor me and read it again:

“I’m sending you to Jesse in Bethlehem because I’ve selected one of his sons to be king…I will reveal to you what you should do, and you will anoint for me the one I point out to you.” Samuel did what the Lord told him…He performed the ceremonies for Jesse and his sons and invited them to the sacrifice. When they came, he saw Eliab and thought, “Certainly, here in the Lord’s presence is his anointed king.”

But the Lord told Samuel, “Don’t look at his appearance or how tall he is, because I have rejected him. God does not see as humans see. Humans look at outward appearances, but the Lord looks into the heart.

Then Jesse called Abinadab and brought him to Samuel. But Samuel said, “The Lord has not chosen this one either.” Then Jesse had Shammah come to Samuel. “The Lord has not chosen this one either,” Samuel said. So Jesse brought seven more of his sons to Samuel, but Samuel told Jesse, “The Lord has not chosen any of these. Are these all the sons you have?” “There’s still the youngest one,” Jesse answered. “He’s tending the sheep.”

Samuel told Jesse, “Send someone to get him. We won’t continue until he gets here.” So David_the_Shepherd_Boy_001Jesse sent for him. He had a healthy complexion, attractive eyes, and a handsome appearance. The Lord said, “Go ahead, anoint him. He is the one.” (Taken from I Samuel 16)

God is the ultimate “scout.”  His ways are not our ways- he looks into the heart, not on outward appearances.  David was a man after God’s heart, faithful, intimate with the Lord…He was not perfect but he knew how to repent.  The Great Scout is looking for men and women, with a heart like David’s, to change the world, to lead His cause and to bring hope to many.  I am proud to say that we have a team made up of “Davids.”  I know my words were few today but let this passage of Scripture challenge and encourage you- God see’s into your heart and He has hand picked you for His team.

Chosen Together,

Brice Maddock, COO – Teen Challenge Southeast

Great Leaders Evaluate How they Spend Their Time

What is the Quality of your Life?

One of the most important things you can do is to sit down and think deeply about how you spend your time, where you don’t spend your time and where you should be spending your time- not just at work, but also in every part of your life. The quality of your life is directly affected by how and where you spend your time.

      –Lee Cockerell

I don’t know about you but when I read this quote, conviction came over me like a flood.  I was stunned to think about the wasted moments in my life…sleeping that extra hour instead of praying, turning on the TV before bed instead of talking to a loved one, reading How-we-spend-our-daysan inspiring book or jotting a note to someone who needs encouragement.

Pause and think with me about the moments in your days that need a “makeover.”  Think about the blocks of time, which we are the authors of; times that could make a difference in eternity- meditating on a Scripture in an area where you are struggling instead of spending time giving into the struggle, journaling your thoughts, ideas and dreams instead of telling yourself they can’t or won’t happen, contacting someone that you should’ve contacted a long time ago to make amends.

I want to challenge you to seize every moment- be a good steward of all that God has given you, use your gifts for others and be consistent in all of these things. God will bless you and your family. Your family and others will be challenged by your example and emulate it.

Seize the moment ideas:

  1. Keep a devotion book in the bathroom
  2. Keep audios in your car about finances, marriage, parenting, etc.
  3. Always have a notebook- many people use their phones or other devices to record thoughts, ideas & lists but you can easily become distracted doing this. There is nothing like a good pen and a blank page.
  4. Keep your sword near. It will ensure your perspective is on point.
  5. Keep blank cards handy to jot notes to those God puts on your heart.
  6. When someone asks you to pray, do it right then. Don’t wait.
  7. Always have a good book at your bedside- something that you can’t wait to read.
  8. Speak life and encouragement to those around you, especially your family- if you are thinking something positive, say it right then.

Let’s take occasion to look at how we are spending (and not spending) our time and ask God to show us the changes we can make, for His glory.  Let’s seize the moment together, friends, and see how God can “makeover” those wasted spells.  Remember, anything we do for Him will be multiplied back to us.  Let us take Him at His Word, together, and see what comes of it!

Rep’s Link – Nov 2015

Welcome!

We welcome our new Rep’s this month Bryan Sampson (Central Florida) and returning Rep Jen Baisden (Lakeland). Thank you for answering the call to raise up sons and daughters!

Level I Adult

Our new course is Servant Leadership and our text: Lead Like Jesus by Ken Blanchard & Phil Hodges. In this course Blanchard talks about leading with your heart, head, hands and habits. Be sure to print out the Rep’s Weekly meeting template which will help with your weekly meetings. The videos for the weekly meetings can be accessed here.

Level I Adolescent

Our course for the Adolescent track is Building Others and our text: Habitudes II – the Art of Connecting with Others by Dr. Tim Elmore. Your students will learn how they influence those around them. Sociologists tell us the most introverted of people will influence 10,000 others in an average lifetime. If introverts influence 10,000 then extroverts influence 20,000. So how do you influence others? Your students will learn how they make a difference in the world they live in and how to add value to others.

The ELP is the K.E.Y to forging our future

The ELP is the K.E.Y to forging our future. The key to Teen Challenge’s future will be determined by the number of us who will be willing to follow the Lord and to be faithful to His call. If we would spend time with the Lord it’s amazing what we will see. Forge means “to move ahead steadily.” Towards what? Our future – “a time yet to come.” God is working on us for a time yet to come; a purpose yet to come.

Know God’s call

A Silversmith sticks metal into the fire, then they beat that piece of metal and forge it into whatever they want it to be. The process includes pain, it includes time and it includes silversmithheat. When we do our part, the Holy Spirit will do the hammering. We spend time in the Word and get to know God and He will tell us what’s the calling He has for us. It’s a process of heat, hammering, heat, hammering and all the while God is working on us until we emerge into who He wants us to be. If we are going to grow and if we are going to release, God has to knock some stuff off of us.  Let healing come because God has a purpose for your life and it’s bigger than you can imagine and it’s more than you can imagine. If we trust Him and get to know Him and get that fear out of us we will do more than we can ever imagine. We must have vision – see beyond the present.

Embody the Vision and Values

The Big Hairy Audacious Goal (BHAG) for TCSE is to “become to life-transformation what Apple is to technology.” It’s expanding, being committed and having a spirit of excellence that delivers life-transformation across this region. The Global dream is “to put hope within reach of every addict.” Embody the vision and values of who we are, and these values will find their way into everything we do in the future. How do we know God’s will? The Lord usually doesn’t tell us the whole path and everything about it; generally it’s one or two steps – we see it, we see beyond where we are at now, God gives us a vision but we don’t see how we are going to do it all. We just say “yes, Lord” and allow Him to prepare us.

Yearning to Learn

We’ll never really get to where were want to be without studying. Proverbs 9:8 says “instruct a wise man, he’ll be wiser still, teach a righteous man and he will add to his learning.” Leaders are learners, leaders are listeners – we listen twice as much as we talk especially when we are developing relationships with others and winning people to Jesus. Listen with your eyes, listen with your ears, listen with your heart to what others are saying. Great leaders are always learning; seeking out new ways to benefit the organization, to better themselves and to move things down the path.  We have a vision to put Hope Outreaches across this region and with God’s help we’ll do it. We want to go in and impart hope and reach out to addicts and to really make a difference. God can use us to be a servant right where we are at and when He is ready for the next step He’ll make it known. It’s generally already observed by others and they are the ones who will say “hey, I have the next step for you and here it is.”

There is always purpose in timing, there is always purpose in the pain and God is working in you and in the people around you. Learn to submit to the authority over you. The spirit of a servant says where can I serve, how can I be in your presence Lord and know You and let my life count? Know God’s call for your life, Embody the values that God has put in your heart as a TC leader and have that “Yearning to learn.”

We believe leadership is a 360-degree proposition. The leadership journey begins with self-leadership; we must lead ourselves before we lead anyone else.

Leadership Transitions

Transitions are like delivering a baby; difficult for a while but when the baby arrives it’s the cutest thing you have ever seen! They are also difficult because something dies or closes for something new to give birth and there are so many unknowns in the process. Solomon describes the paradox of life this way “there is a right time for everything under the sun – a time to be born; a time to die; a time to plant; a time to harvest, a time to destroy, a time to rebuild’ (Ecc 3, TLB). For every season of our lives there is a beginning and there is an end. However, Jesus comforts us with these words from Matthew 6 “your heavenly Father already knows perfectly well what you need and he will give them to you if you give Him first place in your life and live as he wants you to. So don’t be anxious about tomorrow. God will take care of your tomorrow too. Live one day at a time” (TLB).

For many of us, as we move through various stages of our lives, we reach junctions – TollBooths2points of transition. Some challenges require us to rise to the occasion – they will either become tollbooths we progress through or roadblocks. The price to go through the tollbooth might be a tough decision we must make, or a situation we must leave behind; it may mean a class we must take, or a job we must quit. We must calibrate our expectations, manage disappointments, and be realistic about the speed and ease of our lives. The best solution then, is to learn adaptability. We must balance how we possess expectations, but also realize that a wonderful gift may not be wrapped as we expect.” ~ Dr. Tim Elmore – Habitudes for the Journey

If we are pliable in God’s hand – yielded to His will, His thoughts and His ways, then we become more flexible – more adaptable to times of transition and change and, as a result we grow in our dependence on the Holy Spirit. Reminds me of this paraphrase of Matthew 11:6 “blessed is he who does not get offended at [how I choose to operate My kingdom on this earth]” (paraphrase by Virgina Young). Recently, our Corporate Training Team went through a major transition which was painful but I had to rest in the fact that God had everything under control and He had each one’s best interest at heart. We all had to spend significant amount of time with the Lord as we contemplated the next season. God is good and He is faithful to perfect the good work He started in us.

It is with mixed emotions of sadness, and yet excitement, that we say goodbye to Karissa Corpeny and Andrew Chalmers who served our emerging leaders and staff for 8 years and 4 years respectively. Karissa moved on to start her own consulting business and Andrew started Take the City as a non-profit organization. Please keep them in prayer in their new endeavors. Dustin Nance is now the Divisional Leader in charge of Training which means ELP will merge with the Emerging Leaders College. There is a creative team that will be assessing the structure of ELP and looking for ways to provide more role-specific training for Teen Challenge staff. We look forward to see what God births in this new season.

Some coaching questions to ask as you go through a transition:

How am I balancing my expectations with reality?

Am I in a season of giving birth or closure?

What do I see when I assess the speed and ease of my life?

What are the themes that are consistent when God is preparing me for a transition?
