Our course for the Adolescent track is The Art of Self Leadership and the text: Habitudes I  – The Art of Self Leadership by Tim Elmore. This book is part of a series of 3 books. They are based on the fact that leadership isn’t merely one-dimensional – it runs 360 degrees – we influence others all around us. The leadership journey begins with self-leadership – we must lead ourselves before we lead anyone else.

Success in the Arena – Leaving a Legacy

In honor of the Super Bowl, last month’s article was on The Arena.  The Arena is the placePeyton Manning where legends are born- legends like Peyton Manning.  Most of you know that Peyton just retired from football, after eighteen years of hard work and dedication.  The Denver Post printed an article covering the story called, Peyton Manning’s Legacy Will Need to Be Told By Others. Here is an excerpt from that article,

“At Manning’s retirement ceremony…the final question was in regard to Peyton’s footprint revolutionizing the position of quarterback, and what impact he would have on future quarterbacks. He responded: ‘I can’t answer that myself…’ Peyton would decline to define his legacy. That delineation of influence will be left up to millions of other people…”

Success in the arena has many aspects but, when thinking about the subject, two things really came to my mind.  The first aspect is summed up by this quote from an anonymous author, “Success isn’t just about what you accomplish in your life, it’s about what you inspire others to do.”  Many of you have experienced success in this area.  Whether you have inspired a student to be the father or mother that God had called them to be or an intern to work for a cause that helps others or maybe you have inspired your own son or daughter to follow in your ministry footprints- success has to do with what you influence others to do- this is an important part of your legacy and those that you have inspired, will tell your story.

Secondly, success in the arena has to do, not just with personal “wins,” but with team wins as well.  Read Manning’s definition of success in the arena, “When I look back on my NFL career, I’ll know without a doubt that I gave everything I had to help my teams walk away with a win.”

This is a challenge to all of us- are we doing everything we can so that our team wins?  Yes, we want personal success and legacy but there is nothing more inspiring than seeing a team play for team success.  It brings great glory to God when His people work together for a common cause and a common victory.  When this happens, no one man gets accolades; the accolades rest at the throne of God.

How do we manage this kind of legacy?  How do we gain the success that inspires others and brings both personal and team victories?  Read what Peyton is quoted as saying, “There were other players who were more talented, but there was no one who could out-prepare me. And, because of that, I have no regrets.”

Peyton Manning was not the most talented quarterback the NFL has ever seen but he arguable was the most prepared.  I want to challenge you today to prepare for success.  The most important and effective way to do this is through prayer and the study of God’s Word.  When we put on the full armor of God, we are prepared to expect, fight and win the daily battles that rage in our lives.  As we focus on preparing for success, we will inspire others, see victories in our lives and in the lives of our teammates. It is then we will leave a legacy for others and we will say, like Paul, “I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith.” 2 Timothy 4:7

Welcome

Happy New Year everyone!!! We welcome new Rep’s Chris Massieu (Southwest FL Men’s), Lynne Shewman (Pensacola W) and Elizabeth Price (Columbus W)! Thank you for committing to raise up the next generation of leaders in Teen Challenge.

Level I Adult

Our new course is Boundaries and our text: Boundaries by Dr. Henry Cloud. This course is designed to help the participant learn how to have proper boundaries in their lives.  Having clear boundaries is essential to a healthy, balanced lifestyle.  A boundary is a personal property line that marks those things for which we are responsible.  Boundaries define who we are and are not. Remember this is a 2-month course.

Level I Adolescent

Our course for the Adolescent track is Servant Leadership and our text: Help! I’m a Student Leader by Doug Fields. This book serves to help student leaders embrace the opportunity that, as a student, you can also be a leader. This book introduces servant-leadership, talks about the heart of a servant, gives practical tips on the attitudes and actions of a servant-leader, and provides guidance to your unique leadership role – not just in Teen Challenge but in every area of your world in which you have influence.

Age:   37 years old

Hometown: Born and raised in Macclenny, FL

Teen Challenge Center:   On staff with TC Jacksonville Men’s Center 2 years.

Which Center/What Year did you Graduate: I graduated Jacksonville Men’ Center August 2013 and was hired March 2014. I will complete ELP Level II in a few months.

My Testimony in Brief: I didn’t want for material things but had no real life skills due to my parents own addictions and bad life skills. I used alcohol and pot at age 15, cocaine at age 16, ecstasy and LSD at age 20, pills and crack from age 24 to 30 and pills and meth age 30 to 33. I was busted by DEA for manufacturing meth in 2012 and soon after entered Teen Challenge where God transformed my life.

The Purpose and Calling God has Given Me: My purpose and calling is to teach relationship skills based on the Word of God; having Agape love that goes where it isn’t deserved and doesn’t have expectations when it isn’t received. Destroying the work of the devil; namely division.

The ELP’s Impact on My Leadership:  ELP has given me the tools and desire to achieve this by learning about influence, selflessness and serving others. It has also brought out giftings and dreams that I didn’t know I had.

Mentoring and Coaching – Investing in Others

Pouring in versus drawing out – that’s one of the simplest ways to differentiate between mentoring and coaching.

There is a time and a place for pouring into, or mentoring, others. Those who have more life experience, wisdom, and Biblical knowledge have a responsibility to pass on what they know to those who are younger, whether in age or faith. Paul’s word to Timothy was to “entrust to reliable people who will also be qualified to teach others” (2 Timothy 2:2).  Multiplication of disciples at its finest – tell them what I told you, so they can tell others!

Mentoring says, “I love you enough to give you everything that I have. I want to see you succeed; here’s what I know to help you do that.”

Life Coaching, on the other hand, says, “I believe you have what it takes to figure this out. I love you enough to listen and give you my full attention while you talk through this and create your own plan of action and change.”

Coaches use open-ended questions to draw out what a person has in them. Additionally, Christian coaches rely on the principles that God initiates change and that His sheep hear His voice. Coaching keeps the responsibility for growth and change with the coachee. Though asking and listening takes more time than telling, the impact is powerful.

Within the ministry of Teen Challenge, both mentoring and coaching have their place. Both say to students, interns and staff, “I’m invested in you.” They just say it differently.

Ask yourself:

  • Who in my realm of influence would benefit from mentoring or coaching?
  • What is the impact of mentoring on a conversation? Of coaching on a conversation?
  • When is it most appropriate to use mentoring in your ministry? When is coaching most effective?
  • What’s one step you can take this month to grow in the disciplines of mentoring and/or coaching?
