Brief Testimony: When I was living in the world I was consumed with a lifestyle of sin. I was lost and broken and a door opened for me to come to Teen Challenge. While enrolled in TC, I rededicated my life to Christ. God began speaking to me, as He broke off the chains of depression and heroin addiction. I now live a life with more freedom, peace, and joy than I could ever have imagined.

What is the vision and calling that God has given you? – God has called me specifically to Teen Challenge to serve Him in full-time ministry. My vision is to serve in this ministry and help broken men overcome their addictions and pain through the power of Christ in me.

 How has the ELP Program impacted you? – ELP is giving me the leadership skills that I need to help me become the leader God has called me to be. I’ve also grown spiritually, as I am learning more and more about God’s perspective on leadership. ELP is helping me answer the call that God has placed on my life.

ELP Highlight – June 2017

Name: Christie Ganpat

Teen Challenge Center: Graduated from Davie Teen Challenge, 2016

Brief Testimony: My parents were divorced when I was 2 years old. I lived with my dad for the early part of my childhood, my dad was an alcoholic. I moved in with my mom when I was 12 and started drinking and experimenting with drugs at age 13. At 28 I found myself in a very abusive relationship, very hopeless and broken. I came to Teen Challenge and found love in the right place and so much has been restored in my life. I know that God is able and He is the lover of my soul.

What is the vision and calling that God has given you? God has called me to be a light in a dark world. I know that He has called me to be a leader within Teen Challenge, to continue giving the same hope that was given to me to others. I know He is raising me up to spread His love to others.

How has the Emerging Leaders Program impacted you? ELP has given me the ability to admit my faults and recognize that I’m not perfect. It has taught me to remain teachable and allow God to show me how to lead like Jesus did. I’m so happy I decided to remain on this journey and I’m so ready to go to the next level with my God!

Training Facilitator Highlight – June 2017

Name: Barbara Cooper

Age: 61

Hometown: Woodbridge, VA

Teen Challenge Center: Davie Women’s Center

Brief Testimony: I was working in the bar business and realized at 26 I was heading for trouble. I was blacking out every time I drank. Someone told me I would like this church, so I went and I did and was born again.  A friend of mine started working at TC and I went to visit her and the Director offered me a job, so I went through the program as a staff, so to say.  God dealt with me about the same things He was dealing with the students about.

What do you enjoy most about your role? I love seeing the captives get set free and watching God do it anyway He wants-can’t put God in a box that’s for sure!

Why do you feel that leadership and training are valuable?  When I started, it was on the job training by the Holy Spirit-I never cried so much in my life! God was merciful and used me in spite of me still being crippled in many ways. I feel that Teen Challenge training is putting out a much better quality of staff and they are healthier physically, mentally, emotionally, and better prepared spiritually for the battle.  Those that stick with it turn out to be “quality”.

Conflict Resolution

Whenever I think of conflict resolution I go back to my many hours of management training…watching “The Office”! There’s an episode where the manager, Michael Scott, takes the HR Manual and decides to resolve a major conflict in the office. Oscar and Angelia are in conflict over a poster that Angelia has up. It’s a picture of babies playing in a jazz band. Oscar finds it offensive and believes it should be taken down, however Angelia loves it and wants to see it every day. Michael steps in, being the great manager that he is, and decides to resolve this in one of the 6 models presented in the HR Manual. He chooses the Win, Win Win model, this is the one where all parties win including the moderator. He saves the day by making Oscar wear a t-shirt with the image on it so he doesn’t have to see it and Angelia can see it all day!

Conflict Resolution

While I would not suggest this as a model or resolution to issues like this in your area of influence, I would suggest taking on conflict resolution and confrontation with his intentionality in this episode. Generally speaking, people do not enjoy conflict or confrontation, however it is a necessary part of leadership.

While preparing for the Summit/Staff Days I have been reading through John Maxwell’s EQUIP teaching on “Leading When Times are Tough”. One of the topics challenges us on the fact that confrontation is biblical and gives multiple examples found in scripture. (II Corinthians 10:4-5; I Thessalonians 5:14; II Timothy 4:2-4; Colossians 1:28; Titus 1:13)

He states “your goal is to see them transformed by the power of God…not condemnation, but restoration”. Those we lead need to know that we love them, but need to know that we love truth more than anything!

I have taken a few of Maxwell’s Steps Toward Effective Confrontation and condensed them for you:

  1. Pray through your own anger and initiate the contact.
  • Don’t let emotion lead you. Wait until you’re objective, but deal with the issue             before they become too big.
  •  Don’t wait for them, scripture beckons you t make things right whether you are          the offender or the offended person.
  1. Explain what you have seen and/or heard and how you understand it.
  • Bring up the issue, and explain you don’t understand what’s happened.
  • The meeting may be more of a clarification than a confrontation. Give them the         benefit of the doubt and allow them to explain themselves.
  • It’s important to not attribute motives in this step, make this meeting a “fact                 finding meeting” initially.
  1. Listen and allow them to respond.
  • You must stop and allow them to respond. They may present a new perspective      that will help you both.
  • They may also throw up on you, listen anyway.
  1. Establish forgiveness and repentance, if necessary.
  • Connect the issue you are correcting with who they are in Christ. Don’t conclude       the meeting until forgiveness is extended and issues are clear and resolved.
  1. Pray and affirm you appreciation as you close your time together.
  •  Always close these times with prayer. Give them hope, and remind them od their     place in God’s heart and yours; help them never to question that they are loved.

Another good example of how to walk through confrontation is found in Ken Blanchard’s “The New One Minute Manager”. He calls it a One Minute Re-Direct and it breaks down like this:

  1. Re-Direct people as soon as possible.
  2. Confirm the facts first, and review the mistake together—be specific.
  3. Express how you feel about the mistake and it’s impact on results.
  4. Pause – be quiet for a moment to allow people time to feel concerned about what they’ve done.
  5. Remember to let them know that they’re better than their mistakes, and that you think well of them as a person.
  6. Remind them that you have confidence and trust in them, and support their success.
  7. Realize that when the Re-Direct is over, it’s over.

For me, one of the most powerful points of both of these methods for confrontation is the fact finding meeting. I am a leader that naturally assumes people’s motives and this step has helped me slow down and explain how I see the situation and ask what actually happened. Sometimes I have been right and me slowing down allowed the person to see their wrong doing and repent. Other times I have been wrong and it was a good thing I did not come into the meeting swinging and making accusations.

Confrontation is going to happen in any healthy organization and it certainly happens in Teen Challenge. I challenge you as leaders to be as intentional as possible when approaching these conversations. You have the opportunity to correct and build people up as an important part of the body of Christ or tear people down and leave them in your wake.

This book reveals the principles that evolved during the building years of the organization. You’ll learn principles such as:

  • Cherish and Celebrate Victories along the Way
  • You Can Fund Your Vision
  • Learn to Laugh and much more…

You can see your dream become a reality as you apply these principles and as you stay faithful to the dream in your heart. Don’t quit short of what God has put in your heart to accomplish. God has a master plan for your life and He has endowed you with the gifts and talents to accomplish what He has called you to do.

Welcome

Happy New Year everyone!!! We welcome new Rep’s Chris Massieu (Southwest FL Men’s), Lynne Shewman (Pensacola W) and Elizabeth Price (Columbus W)! Thank you for committing to raise up the next generation of leaders in Teen Challenge.

Level I Adult

Our new course is Boundaries and our text: Boundaries by Dr. Henry Cloud. This course is designed to help the participant learn how to have proper boundaries in their lives.  Having clear boundaries is essential to a healthy, balanced lifestyle.  A boundary is a personal property line that marks those things for which we are responsible.  Boundaries define who we are and are not. Remember this is a 2-month course.

 

Level I Adolescent

Our course for the Adolescent track is Servant Leadership and our text: Help! I’m a Student Leader by Doug Fields. This book serves to help student leaders embrace the opportunity that, as a student, you can also be a leader. This book introduces servant-leadership, talks about the heart of a servant, gives practical tips on the attitudes and actions of a servant-leader, and provides guidance to your unique leadership role – not just in Teen Challenge but in every area of your world in which you have influence.

Monthly Book Orders and Grades

Southeast region Rep’s can go to Google Drive and search for ELP Monthly Order Form and Grade Sheet Edited. Look for your center’s name in the tabs at the bottom and fill in your information. No need to save or email the spreadsheet (Google Drive saves it and we can access the info from my Drive). If you place an initial order on the form and update the order later (i.e. add 2 more books) after we have ordered your books, please send to me at andree.aiken@teenchallenge.cc. All new applications must be in by the 10th of the month for students starting the 15th.

 

ELP Highlight Nov 2015

Name: Matthew B. SampsonBryan Sampson

Hometown: Lexington, KY

Teen Challenge Center:  Central Florida Men’s.  I have been on staff for 6 months. I graduated in September 2014

My Testimony in Brief:   I let drugs and alcohol consume every aspect of my life. I let the ways of the world guide me on a path of destruction allowing me to feel no remorse for anyone. Jesus still loved me! He loved me so much that he died for it all, just so I could be reconciled to Him. Through His love I have been able to love others.

 The Purpose and Calling God has Given Me:  He has called me to bring people out of darkness, to be a testimony of his power and love. I will be working with Teen Challenge as I continue to grow and educate myself; becoming the best vessel for the Holy Spirit to operate through.

The ELP’s Impact on My Leadership:  The ELP program has brought what was once a timid, quiet voice and turned it into a lion! I’m now a leader who serves his fellow brothers and will do whatever he can to see them succeed, leading them to victory in Christ.

Core Courses

Those of you who are finishing up your final course for People First, remember to mail or fax (706-534-0462) your Personal Action Plans (PAP) at the end of each chapter. I’ll grade these and send back to you.

Our core course this month is Strategic Planning and Decision-making and our text: Executive Values by Kurt Senske. In this course you will leave with a game plan for Exec Values PICChrist-centered leadership that stresses the development of a healthy organizational culture, values-based strategic planning, mentoring, and balancing professional and personal lives.

ELP Highlight – Aug 2015

Name: Joyce A. DavisJoyce TC AZ

Role: Kitchen Coordinator

Center: Tucson Teen Challenge, Men’s Induction Center

I was approached by my dear friend and co-worker Patrice Bloom to participate in the ELP Program for the Tucson Teen Challenge Men’s Induction Center.  Without telling Patrice, I thought, “No way will I participate in a program that requires hours and hours of study.  I am too busy and way too old to take on anything else.”

After speaking at length with Patrice, she explained why it would be beneficial for me to complete this course of study.  Well, needless to say, when I realized that completing the program would allow me to have a better understanding of our students and another way for me to serve in a “Servant Leadership” position.  That was the pivotal point for me.  I love our students as God instructs – without rhyme or reason – I love them and want to assist students and/or staff in any way possible.

I want to be the best “representative” for our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, as well as for Teen Challenge.  Completing the ELP Program gave me additional tools, information and Biblical knowledge to be a better Leader for Teen Challenge.  The program also put me in a better position to “step up to the plate” for Jesus Christ.  I now think about how I can help in any situation.  I have always been a “team player, leader & doer”.  But after completing the ELP Program I have taken the job of “team player, leader & doer” to a whole new level.

I am very thankful that Patrice thought enough of me to allow me this opportunity.

“Coaching has absolutely changed my life! I believe that every Teen Challenge should have a coaching program. It isn’t easy by any means because of the effort and work you must put forth, but it is extremely beneficial. It challenges me to really dig deep into my relationship with God and depend on Him for the next step in my life. It helps me to see that the decisions I make now affect my future. Coaching is amazing and I love the fact that I get something new out of it every time. God has totally blessed me with this experience and opportunity.”
How has coaching helped you move forward in the program?
It’s helped me to address the things that I struggle with currently and that could be a struggle in the future. It’s helped me to grow. It’s made me more confident. Rather than focusing on the past, it’s focusing on who I can become in Christ. It pushes me to do things I never thought I could do, like lead others.
How has it prepared you as a leader?
It’s helped me to be a more gentle leader and to reach out to others in ways I was reached out to that helped me.
What makes coaching different than advising?
You focus on the future rather than the past. I am growing in areas that benefit the here and now and my future.
What’s been most helpful in coaching?
Being able to focus on one thing in a session rather than a million things. I am pushed to search things out for myself rather than feeding off other’s relationship with God. It’s helped me to dig deep in my relationship with God.
