Brief Testimony: I’ve been walking with the Lord since I was a young girl, and I don’t regret it for a moment. He’s currently showing me that He is after each and every crevice of my heart, no matter how small, He wants it all. I’ve been with this ministry for close to 5 years now and I love being able to represent His love and grace in the lives of others, and I’m so thankful for the opportunity to do so.

What do you enjoy most about your role?  Seeing the ladies challenged to grow and seeing them walk out what God has illuminated to them.

Why do you feel that leadership and training are valuable?  Without training, without growth, we would stay in a stagnant place and that’s not what God is calling us to. Leadership, true biblical leadership, leaves a lasting positive impact on others and that’s what I want my ELP students to walk away with.

Level I Adult 

We will start this month’s core course with, Knowing and Understanding God and our text: Experiencing God; Knowing and Doing the Will of God

by Henry and Ricard Blackaby and Claude King. This study will help to answer the cry of your heart for intimacy with God. If you are saying, “Show me Your ways, O LORD; Teach me Your paths, For You are the God of my salvation; On You I wait all the day (Psalm 25:4, 5 NKJV),” here is a study that will open your understanding of God’s will for your life and you will experience Him in a deep and profound way. Those who do this in-depth study will never be the same. Your heart will burn with a hunger for God and you will experience Him in a very personal way. Your comprehension of His will and purpose will be clearer and you will know your Heavenly Father as never before.

If you have students who are working on their elective track, please update the “ELP Monthly Order Form and and Tracking Sheet”, accordingly.

Level I Adolescent

Our course for the Adolescent track is Leading Others and our text: Habitudes #3“The Art of Leading Others” by Dr. Tim Elmore. Habitudes are images that form leadership habits and attitudes. This book is part of a series of three. It will enable you to leverage personal power instead of mere positional power. We believe leadership is a 360-degree proposition. The leadership journey begins with self-leadership. We must lead ourselves before we lead anyone else. Next, we learn to lead up-in relationships with those over us. Then, we learn to lead and influence those around us. Finally, we lead those under our care.

“Response-Ability”

Greetings to our Emerging Leader family! The last month of 2016 is upon us, and I believe you would agree with me that it has indeed flown by. Hopefully we can have a moment to look back on 2016-it’s challenges, hardships, accomplishments, and learn from it. Also, we can look back and be encouraged by God’s faithfulness. Nevertheless, our mission of Putting Hope Within Reach drives us forward into 2017.

Recently, Dr. Jerry Nance spoke on “Personal Responsibility” here at our Headquarters. We were challenged and encouraged, gaining further insight into personal responsibility. He shared a small paragraph from Dr. Frank Thomas in his teaching:

Personal capital is closely related to personal responsibility, when personal responsibility is defined as a person’s “response-ability,” that is, the ability of a person to maturely respond to the various challenges and circumstances of life. Personal capital is also closely connected with character, when character is defined as a person’s moral or ethical quality, and the character of a person gives them advantages to respond to the challenges of life. Personal capital, then, is the inner resources, assets, and advantages of personal responsibility and character that one brings to the challenges and circumstances of life. When personal capital is low, a person is a victim of circumstances, at the effect of life and not able to consciously and purposefully choose his or her own thoughts, feelings and actions. Victims typically identify themselves based upon attributes of powerlessness, dependency, entitlement, apathy, worry, fear, self-doubt, and the like. The victim lives at the effect of what happens around them and has little personal capital to, in response to the challenges of life, choose and direct life’s direction and destiny.  

In our context, working with people on the path to life transformation, these truths are monumental for our students to grasp. But from a leadership standpoint, where can we continue to grow in character, growing our “response-ability?” If character and our “personal-capital” are running low in our lives, how can we then fill our tanks? I believe it is coming back to the beginning, the headwaters of our calling and identity in Christ, knowing that we said “Yes” to Christ and His calling as Emerging Leaders. We must be responsible for our thinking, decisions, departments, and our students.

If we model the victim mentality, our lives will fall short of success, and so will our students’ lives. However, if we respond to life’s challenges with moral character, Christ will be modeled to our students. After all, Christ was the greatest example of personal responsibility. I encourage and challenge us all to continue to be leaders of integrity, character and conviction, responding to life’s challenges with maturity, owning our choices and lives, and responding positively when things happen that are out of our control. Remember, we have a young generation that “listens with its eyes”. How we walk through life makes a difference on those that look up to us as leaders.

In closing, as we move forward into 2017, let us continue to pray and lift up our leaders, as they work towards implementing change, growth and improvement throughout our entire region! May God richly bless you with grace as you teach and live the gospel at each of our amazing locations this month. And of course…Merry Christmas!

My Testimony: At the age of 29, my life took a huge turn that lasted 12 years before I found Teen Challenge. My addiction to crack cocaine took me to places that I never ever dreamed of going. It was at Teen Challenge where God met me, right where I was at, and through His grace I will be forever changed.

The Purpose and Calling God has Given Me: My purpose is to love the unlovable and to reach the unreachable with the gospel of good news in our Lord, Jesus Christ. The calling is to be a shepherd to a flock.

The ELP’s Impact on My Leadership: Level 1 of ELP has shown me the importance of being an Armor Bearer, Team Player, and making healthy boundaries in my personal life and work environment which resulted in teaching me the value of being a “Servant Leader.” While serving as the Intake Coordinator, I learned how to organize my work day as the result of taking the ELP Administrative Career Track. This helped me to become the organized leader that I am today.

Current Course

This month we start a new core course called Ethics and Integrity and our text: IntegrityIntegrity PIC by Dr. Henry Cloud. Integrity is more that simple honesty; it is the key to major successes. This book seeks to answer the question why some people, no matter what the circumstances, are able to pull everything together to have success. The study helps develop the six qualities of character that define integrity. According to the writer, talent and brains may help, but the real factor is the makeup of the person. All of us can grow fruitful relationships and achieve our purpose, mission and goals.

Your first post for Integrity will be up on the discussion forum by Tuesday, December 19th.

This course is designed to help our emerging student leaders learn how to have proper boundaries in their lives. Having clear boundaries is essential to a healthy, balanced lifestyle. A boundary is a personal property line that marks those things for which we are responsible. Emerging leaders will discover firsthand how sound boundaries give them freedom to walk as the loving, giving, fulfilled individual God created them to be.

Culture of Blessing

In our last article, Dustin Nance re-hashed the dynamics of conflict in the Teen Challenge context from our ELP Summit, challenging us in what can be our natural or first response to strong behavioral issues with our students. Many times, he explained, our students with strong behavioral outbursts have much more going on beneath the surface, and these outbursts need to be met in those moments with compassion and gentleness, not aggression and immediate correction.

To continue to expound on this ever-relevant issue in our field, we continue this month with more of what John Maxwell teaches on this topic. He calls it “Pass the Blessing, Please!” Oftentimes, he urges, people deal with difficulties beneath the surface because they are hungry for “the blessing.”

In Old Testament times, patriarchs of our faith would express “the blessing” in many different forms. Maxwell states that these occur by:

  1. Meaningful touch: Patriarchs laid their hands on their shoulder or embraced them.
  2. Affirming Words: Patriarchs spoke words of encouragement to them.
  3. The Expression of High Value: Patriarchs shared the value they added to others.
  4. The Description of a Special Future: Patriarchs used word pictures to share their potential.
  5. Genuine Commitment: Patriarchs committed themselves to see it come to pass.  

As we can see, there are many ways to express “the blessing” to our students, or to anyone to whom the Lord has granted us of having influence upon.

I recall, as an ELC student, sometimes during our group devotions, one of our staff started the devotion by encouraging outwardly the person sitting next to him, verbally and publicly sharing of that person’s worth and specific value they added to our campus. After he was finished, he asked that person to continue to do the same around the room. It was incredible to say the least to watch what unfolded, and many times as one person would look to the next person they were going to encourage, oftentimes tears would come before words. What was happening? People were connecting with the value of those they were serving alongside. What would happen if we did this everyday, naturally? I would think. What would our campuses look like if this was the norm, and not the exception?

Of course, this helped cultivate an organic culture of encouragement and helped our campus greatly, and spawned individuals to gain clarity of their beneath the surface issues, helping the roots of behavioral challenges and unresolved conflict, which improved issues on the surface.  

Of course, there are many ways, as Maxwell states, to “Pass the blessing” I would encourage you to learn even more the students and leaders you work with on your campus, quick to accept the responsibility to bless them often in the ways they are hungry for. As they say, we are in “The people business” and our highest honor is that we get to work with people, every one of them with dignity, value and worth.  Our tasks and to-do lists are not more important than the people we serve and lead. They themselves are the primary objective, not our tasks, no matter how big they may seem. Every person receives affirmation and blessing in different ways, but where genuine desire to bless them is present, God is near to help us and lead us by His Spirit as we do so.

ELP Summit_Staff Day Aug 15-18

The purpose of our ELP Summit_Staff Day is to create a high quality leadership event with the following aspects:

  • A Themed Event (that makes it meaningful and memorable)
  • Spiritual Emphasis (opportunities for participants to encounter God through prayer and ministry)
  • Cast Vision (let staff see that God and TC is bigger than their local center)
  • Foster Relationships (create a network across centers)
  • Provide Leadership Teaching (through speakers, panel discussions, activities…)
  • Cultivate Culture (TC DNA and Core Values)
  • Increase Alignment with our vision “To put Hope Within Reach” and current season of “being healthy, whole and aligned.”

This month we welcome Kelly Adkins (Women at the Well, PA) to Level II! Kelly, we look forward to serving you and helping you to grow in your leadership!

Core Courses

We continue with our 3-month course Values in Leadership and our text: People First by Jack Lannom. The first acrostic is Logos. Logos is a Greek word that is often translated as wisdom, doctrine or logic. Logic is framed on the foundation of knowledge. If you are building a structure like the Sears Tower or the Empire State Building, you must construct a massively solid foundation before you can safely and successfully erect the magnificent superstructure. Knowledge is the very foundation of leadership. The Leader’s Leader provides a unified knowledge base that unites everyone in the organization.

Remember to fill in your Personal Action Plans at the end of each chapter. You will turn in these at the end of the course.
