Welcome

This month we welcome Sharon Varasse as the ELP Rep for the Emerging Leaders College. Sharon is a TC graduate of Women at the Well and a recent graduate of ELC. Welcome Sharon! Thanks for answering the call of God to raise up the next generation of leaders!

Level I Adult

This month we start our new course Team Building and our text: The 17 Essential Qualities of a Team Player by John Maxwell. Maxwell presents a clear analysis of the personal characteristics necessary for becoming an effective team player. He outlines the success of team players who have been Intentional – making every action count toward a long-term goal. Relational – focused on others. Selfless – willing to take a subordinate role for the sake of the team. Tenacious – hardworking and optimistic in the face of setbacks. Your emerging student leaders will learn a lot about working with a team from this course.

Level I Adolescent

Our course for the Adolescent track is Servant Leadership and our text: Help, I am a Student Leader by Doug Fields. Although this book is set in the context of a youth ministry, our emerging leaders will learn how Jesus led others and figure out how to be more helpful to everyone. They’ll discover the secrets of getting others involved, learn how to listen better and deepen their own faith as a young leader.

Head Scratching Picks

A couple of days ago, Media Analyst, Daniel Jeremiah wrote an article called, 2016 NFL Draft: Five Head-Scratching Picks. In the article, Jeremiah describes five NFL “picks” that literally left him scratching his head.  They were players that he felt should have been “passed over” for other, more talented or qualified players.

Rewind with me, three thousand years ago to another head-scratching moment that changed the course of history.  You know the story well but humor me and read it again:

“I’m sending you to Jesse in Bethlehem because I’ve selected one of his sons to be king…I will reveal to you what you should do, and you will anoint for me the one I point out to you.” Samuel did what the Lord told him…He performed the ceremonies for Jesse and his sons and invited them to the sacrifice. When they came, he saw Eliab and thought, “Certainly, here in the Lord’s presence is his anointed king.”

But the Lord told Samuel, “Don’t look at his appearance or how tall he is, because I have rejected him. God does not see as humans see. Humans look at outward appearances, but the Lord looks into the heart.

Then Jesse called Abinadab and brought him to Samuel. But Samuel said, “The Lord has not chosen this one either.” Then Jesse had Shammah come to Samuel. “The Lord has not chosen this one either,” Samuel said. So Jesse brought seven more of his sons to Samuel, but Samuel told Jesse, “The Lord has not chosen any of these. Are these all the sons you have?” “There’s still the youngest one,” Jesse answered. “He’s tending the sheep.”

Samuel told Jesse, “Send someone to get him. We won’t continue until he gets here.” So David_the_Shepherd_Boy_001Jesse sent for him. He had a healthy complexion, attractive eyes, and a handsome appearance. The Lord said, “Go ahead, anoint him. He is the one.” (Taken from I Samuel 16)

God is the ultimate “scout.”  His ways are not our ways- he looks into the heart, not on outward appearances.  David was a man after God’s heart, faithful, intimate with the Lord…He was not perfect but he knew how to repent.  The Great Scout is looking for men and women, with a heart like David’s, to change the world, to lead His cause and to bring hope to many.  I am proud to say that we have a team made up of “Davids.”  I know my words were few today but let this passage of Scripture challenge and encourage you- God see’s into your heart and He has hand picked you for His team.

Success in the Arena – Leaving a Legacy

 

In honor of the Super Bowl, last month’s article was on The Arena.  The Arena is the placePeyton Manning where legends are born- legends like Peyton Manning.  Most of you know that Peyton just retired from football, after eighteen years of hard work and dedication.  The Denver Post printed an article covering the story called, Peyton Manning’s Legacy Will Need to Be Told By Others. Here is an excerpt from that article,

“At Manning’s retirement ceremony…the final question was in regard to Peyton’s footprint revolutionizing the position of quarterback, and what impact he would have on future quarterbacks. He responded: ‘I can’t answer that myself…’ Peyton would decline to define his legacy. That delineation of influence will be left up to millions of other people…”

Success in the arena has many aspects but, when thinking about the subject, two things really came to my mind.  The first aspect is summed up by this quote from an anonymous author, “Success isn’t just about what you accomplish in your life, it’s about what you inspire others to do.”  Many of you have experienced success in this area.  Whether you have inspired a student to be the father or mother that God had called them to be or an intern to work for a cause that helps others or maybe you have inspired your own son or daughter to follow in your ministry footprints- success has to do with what you influence others to do- this is an important part of your legacy and those that you have inspired, will tell your story.

Secondly, success in the arena has to do, not just with personal “wins,” but with team wins as well.  Read Manning’s definition of success in the arena, “When I look back on my NFL career, I’ll know without a doubt that I gave everything I had to help my teams walk away with a win.”

This is a challenge to all of us- are we doing everything we can so that our team wins?  Yes, we want personal success and legacy but there is nothing more inspiring than seeing a team play for team success.  It brings great glory to God when His people work together for a common cause and a common victory.  When this happens, no one man gets accolades; the accolades rest at the throne of God.

How do we manage this kind of legacy?  How do we gain the success that inspires others and brings both personal and team victories?  Read what Peyton is quoted as saying, “There were other players who were more talented, but there was no one who could out-prepare me. And, because of that, I have no regrets.”

Peyton Manning was not the most talented quarterback the NFL has ever seen but he arguable was the most prepared.  I want to challenge you today to prepare for success.  The most important and effective way to do this is through prayer and the study of God’s Word.  When we put on the full armor of God, we are prepared to expect, fight and win the daily battles that rage in our lives.  As we focus on preparing for success, we will inspire others, see victories in our lives and in the lives of our teammates. It is then we will leave a legacy for others and we will say, like Paul, “I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith.” 2 Timothy 4:7

Core Courses

Our core course this month is Leadership Principles and our text: 21 Irrefutable Laws of21 Laws PIC Leadership by John Maxwell. With Learning the 21 Irrefutable Laws of Leadership you will be trained on how to become a better and more productive leader. Staff will discover the 21 laws that make leadership work successfully and learn valuable techniques that will help them to improve their abilities in that area.  This study comes with a promise that if you know these laws and do them systematically, any team will succeed beyond all expectations.  “Follow these laws and people will follow you.”

Look out for your book and participant guide from johnmaxwell.com and the DVD’s from the ELP Office. Upon completion of the course, you must return the DVD’s to the ELP Office or your center will be charged the cost of the set ($299.99).

ELP Highlight

I am Kristi LaCoy and I work for Teen Challenge. I’m the Intake Coordinator @ “The Bridge” Teen Challenge for Women located in Franklin, LA. I have been a part of ELP for Kristi LaCoyabout a year and will graduate soon. ELP has taught me so much about working in ministry and as a team. When I started, I didn’t realize how important I was to what is involved in this work. This course has taught me answers to questions I didn’t even know I needed to ask and to serve the way Jesus did.

We believe leadership is a 360-degree proposition. The leadership journey begins with self-leadership; we must lead ourselves before we lead anyone else.

Organizational Health is more felt than telt

Sometimes we get so caught up in the mundane activities we forget to step away from our desk and meet people where they are at. Recently I was at a conference where Simon Sinek talked about “eye ball” leadership – getting up from your desk and going where busy-office-workerspeople are at and look them in the eyes. Really what he was saying is – build relationship with your team. You can’t expect people to work hard for you if they don’t know you. Notice I said work hard – they’ll work for you but they won’t work “hard.” Years ago while working in the airline industry, we did a training on customer service. We only had about 30 seconds to a minute to check in a passenger but during that time we had to get to know them and make the process as personal as possible so they would fly with us again. If we go through such lengths to build relationship with the people who spend their monies with us, how much more we should put into knowing the people who are working with us for decades and some, a lifetime. People want to feel they are accepted, they are loved and they are making a difference. The single most important factor to the success of your team and the overall organization is having authentic relationship with the people you work with.

Simon says “If we set the environment right, trust and cooperation is an automatic response.” ” Leadership is a choice to be responsible for ourselves and the people around us; reinforce the relationship between you and your team members” (Sinek). Leadership requires our two greatest commodity – time and energy. It will take energy to get away from the task at hand to roam the halls to find out how people are doing and to bless them – to offer a word of encouragement or simply to say “thank you.” The best decision you can make every day as a leader is to add value to people. Let them know that you care, you believe in them and you believe they can succeed. Organizational health is more felt than telt.

Farewell 

It is with deep sadness that we say goodbye to Brittany Hughes, ELP Rep at Ft. Myers Women’s Center who served for 4 years. Brittany has served the students and staff well both at her local campus and at our ELP Summits. Brittany will be missed.

Welcome

This month we welcome 4 new ELP Rep’s; Rod Hughes (Tallahassee), Dan Williams (Middle GA), Nicole Petty (Southwest FL W) and Jenny Northern (Columbus W). Welcome leaders! Thank you for answering the call to raise up sons and daughters on your campuses and to seed to the nations. Huge responsibility, but with the Holy Spirit’s guidance we can do it!

Maxwell shows how these qualities, and many others, impact the team and its success. The 17 Essential Qualities of a Team Player is not feel-good platitudes and abstract thinking but concrete actions designed to improve the value of every team player.

Our course for the Adolescent track is Leading Others and our text: Habitudes 3 – The Art of Leading Others by Tim Elmore. This book is the final in a series of 3 books. The leadership journey begins with self-leadership. We must lead ourselves before we lead anyone else. Next we learn to lead up – in relationships with those over us. Then, we learn to lead and influence those around us. Finally, we lead those under our care.
