Insights from the Rep’s

A LEADER WORTH FOLLOWING

“I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd lays down his life for the sheep”  John 10:11.

Some questions that humble me as a leader are; “Am I a leader worth following?” “Do I model the values of our work and home culture?” “Do I do what I ask the team to do?”  “Am I willing to give up my own interests for what’s best for everyone else?” And the question that looms largest, “Will I lay down my life for my family and friends?” For me to be a leader worth following, I will answer affirmative to these revealing questions. Mostly though, I must follow the good shepherd – Jesus.

The Good Shepherd Defends

Jesus is the ultimate leader worth following. He is not “a,” but “the” Good Shepherd. He is good because He is God, and He grows good leaders. The good shepherd Jesus defends the sheep from aggressive enemies. Just as the shepherd David battled the lion and bear on behalf of his flock, so Jesus engages the enemy on our behalf. He sees danger coming before we do, so what may seem an unnecessary diversion may be His protection from a bad decision or bad people.

“The prudent see danger and take refuge, but the simple keep going and pay the penalty” (Proverbs 27:12).

The Good Shepherd Protects

A leader worth following protects his or her people. He lays down his life, his interests, and his ego for the greater good. The others-centered leader also invests in her team. She spends time in mentorship. Over lunch she systematically  helps the less experienced process their pressure points. The leader is vulnerable about her own issues and how she learned from others. A safe culture invites honesty, and the opportunity for professional growth.

Furthermore, what are some ways you can invest in the character of those who look to you as their leader? You have to be good in order to teach others how to be good. Your generosity enhances a culture of generosity. Your care creates a caring culture. Expose your team to books, training and conferences that challenge and grow their character and skills. Begin a weekly or monthly educational process that infuses the values of the culture throughout the enterprise. A leader worth following is out front as an example, among the team to learn, and behind in prayer.

“Follow my example, as I follow the example of Christ” (1 Corinthians 11:1).

Prayer: Heavenly Father grow me into a leader worth following. Lead me to lead like Jesus

WHAT COACHING HAS DONE FOR ME

Angela Hastings

“Nothing is more appropriate than getting excited when God does something in our lives.” ~ Beth Moore

I find it interesting that the last time I posted on my blog was in August. But I don’t find it coincidental. I won’t even blame it on the busyness. It has to do with the fact that God has been doing a major revamping in my life and in my heart. Most of you know that in August, I started life coach training. Part of that training was meeting with one of our instructors for personal coaching. For those of you who are unfamiliar with the concept of Christian life coaching, it’s helping someone discover what God is doing in their lives and helping them to cooperate with Him. What I realized personally, was coaching provided the optimal environment for change. I don’t think we ever really even talked about the big thing that I wanted/needed to change in my life more than once. But over the course of six sessions in 4 months, God changed my heart and my attitude about the thing that was giving me the most trouble. Having an open door to deep, meaningful, intentional conversation and relationship, without the fear of being judged, with the freedom to make mistakes, and with the accountability to take action on what God is telling me to do made a HUGE impact on my life.

You know how scientists tell us that the earth is exactly the right distance from the Sun, and it’s at the exact right tilt so that there can be be life on earth? The conditions are perfect, even though right now some of you would beg to differ because your weather is a little inclement. But ultimately we thrive because of our environment. Coaching is like that perfect environment for thriving. Even now God is giving me a reminder of the sweet babies in Romania that were left all alone in their cribs and failed to thrive. It’s because they lacked relationships. It’s because they didn’t have the love and support they needed to grow. Now, I know that meaningful relationships are not limited to the field of coaching, but I also know that in our chaotic, busy lives, we rarely take the time, energy, and effort to get real and to let others get real.

People, God is at work; He is speaking to us. But if we don’t wake up and do something about it, we are going to miss out. We are not intended to walk through this life alone. And we definitely do not grow best on our own. We are meant to share life together. We are meant to challenge one another. We are meant to confess our faults to one another and to say “This is where I’m really struggling. Please pray for me; I want to change.” We are meant to take what God is saying to us and do something about it. There’s nothing magical about coaching. But it forced me to ask the questions:

What is God doing in my life?
What is God saying to me?
And what am I going to do about it?

And then,  I did it! No, God did it! God did something in my life. And He wants to do something in yours also.

It’s quite fitting that the next course immediately after a Summit is Servant Leadership and our text: Lead Like Jesus ServantLeaderby Ken Blanchard and Phil Hodges. “Jesus is clear about how He wants us to lead: He asks us to make a difference in our world by being effective servant leaders.” Servant leaders lead from the Heart, Head, Hands and Habits. The real secret to leading like Jesus is found in Proverbs 3:5-6: “Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways acknowledge Him and He will make your paths straight.” Remember there is a DVD and a Weekly Meeting Guide for this course. If you don’t have a copy of the DVD, email andree.aiken@teenchallenge.cc and we’ll send a copy for you.

NOT SO WITH YOU – SHORT SLEEVE

This is a lightweight and very fashionable t-shirt – One of the core values of the ELP is “Servant Leadership”. In Matthew 20, Jesus is explaining this new concept of leadership. When Jesus said, “Not so with you”, he was telling the disciples that they were going to have to encounter a shift in thinking if they were to be successful. Later on in the same conversation, Jesus resolves this obscure idea by saying, “…just as the Son of Man did not come to be serve, but to serve and to give His life as a ransom for many…”

 PUT HOPE WITHIN REACH

Want to be a part of “Putting Hope WIthin Reach of Every Addict”? All of the proceeds from the sales of this shirt help raise leaders to spread the Gospel to the masses. You can be a part of this audacious task today!

ELP Highlight – Dec 2013

Name: Justin BattertonJustin

Age: 30

Hometown: Ruston, Louisiana

TC Center: Shreveport, LA TC ( 5 yrs)

I graduated in October of 2008 from Mt Grace Teen Challenge.

I started using drugs at the age of 12, and it was a long, hard road. After 12 years of addiction and two felonies, I knew something had to change. I tried to do it on my own and was never successful. Later, my family told me about Teen Challenge. I came into the program in 2007 lost and hopeless. After a year in Teen Challenge I now not only have hope, but have new life as well.

After completing Teen Challenge, God put it on my heart to stay on as staff. Because of the grace of God, I am now Dean of Students and Teacher at Shreveport Teen Challenge. I am also one of the youth pastors at my church.

I believe God has called to full time ministry. And for me to stay with Teen Challenge and to also continue to be youth pastor at my home church and be involved in other areas there.

The ELP has helped me in a lot of ways with my Leadership. It has helped me to be a better leader. Not only is it pushing me to be a better leader but also pushes me in my relationship with God. It has helped me to be a better teacher, to be an assistant director to Shreveport Teen Challenge. It has also helped me become a youth pastor by training me in areas of leadership and Ministry.

Level II – Nov 2013

ELP Highlight October 2013

emerging leaders program My name is Jessica Jacobsen. I’m 36 years old, and I’m from Haughton Louisiana. I work at Mount Grace for Women. I’ve been a staff member here since September 2012. I graduated from Mount Grace on September 15th 2012. I came to Mount Grace addicted, hopeless, broken, and searching for more. Within a month of being here, I had a supernatural encounter with Jesus Christ that radically transformed me from the inside out. God has called me to teach, and I am currently the Dean of Students here. He has recently given me a desire to counsel as well, and I’m currently pursuing that. Without the ELP program, I wouldn’t have had a model to go by. This program, along with the example my leaders set, is teaching me how to be an effective leader.
